We are the Zombie Emergency Response Organization (ZERO)

The stories of individuals who were allegedly employed as Zombie Hunters. These stories are told by the individual and others who did this covert work! (As told to us at ZERO).
It was early 1980, a major U.S. Corporation was looking for specialized security agents to work on a highly covert project. They preferred individuals with Police and/or Military training, Special Forces, SEALS, those with experience and who were familiar with all areas of weapons, traps, hunting, unafraid of high stress situations and combat.
I had what they wanted. Most people considered me an expert on all small arms, American and foreign. I certainly owned enough and had used plenty in prior operations and services. I was easy for me. Years of hunting, a good friend who was an expert in the areas of traps, booby-traps, explosives, my own training in these areas and plenty of time in very remote areas for extended periods. Nothing really shocked me anymore, too bad, I was only 21 years old.
I was asked to interview with a gentleman who was a top gun with this organization and he also a Law Enforcement commander, nice combination. He gave me a long and intensive interview which eventually focused on my weapons knowledge and use. I told him I was a shotgun man, preferring a 12 gauge combat shotgun over most weapons buts I was and expert with the .223, .308 and several other assault rifles and my favorite was the M-16 and Mini-14 both with a Sniper rig outfitted and that I owned one of the best Mini-14 Sniper set-ups anyone had ever seen. Handguns, well, I preferred the .44 Mag., .45 Auto and the .357 Mag., after all, if you had to use it, you might as well make it count! He was exceptionally pleased and said they would get back with me. He wanted to go to the Range and see my skills with these weapons and what type of ammo I used.
At the Range I was waiting for him. I have the Slugs, Sabots, Buckshot and even a couple of Dragon’s Fire rounds for my Shotgun, a nine round imported combat special that even had a bayonet! He was impressed. Then to my Mini-14, 30 round magazines loaded with .223 Hollow Points, 20 round magazines loaded with Ultra Shock Full Metal Jackets, he practice ally was drooling! Then my .44, .45 and .357, all with Semi-Jacketed Hollow Points, he practically squealed!
OK, lets get started I said, he smiled and had yet to say a word to me. About that time a large Jeep SUV pulled up that was driven by a uniformed Security Officer with another sitting next to him. Two men got out the back seat, they looked like FBI or CIA or something. I said hello but no response was forthcoming from any of these men. I thought for a minute, “what the fuck is this”, so I made sure my .44 Mag was on my side and the smaller 16 shot .380 in my pocket that I had yet to introduce was ready to jump!
After turning on the song Lunatic Fringe by Red Ryder to entertain myself I started with the shotguns. Damn!!! Every time the trigger was pulled the target and pretty much everything around it was totally raked, destroyed, left as just a memory! Sweet. Then the .223, starting at 200 yards to 800 yards, head shots and occasionally multiple rounds in the head and chest in a second or so. Then the pistols. The monster rounds I used actually shattered the posts that the stationary targets were on!
Finally my interviewer asked me if everything I used was overkill, I answered that if I or anyone else was in a combat or defensive or even offensive position such as a specific mission, well, just get the job done and the only way to do that was to completely neutralize your opponent and target.
Then finally a question. One of the ties that got out of the Jeep asked if I could do that to a person who seemed to offer no resistance, was slow, clumsy but determined to get to me. Yes was all I said, then why? The following discussion blew me away and started me on an eight year exceptionally well paid position as a Professional Security Asset Protection Officer and to several parts of this Planet I had never really planned on visiting.
He looked me in the eyes, without any expression or noticeable movement and said simply, “Zombies”.
What the hell did he say? I thought to myself. I said nothing and after several moments he again said Zombies. Finally I said OK.
There apparently has been and was an outbreak of some type of virus or some such crazy over the top bullshit that was all new to me. The Company had some very serious interests and operations in these areas and since they had the money, power and the backing of governments, plus wanted to protect their people and interests as well as the Locals in these areas, they were forming a team of Hunters and was in need of a serious and total, complete, covert Search and Destroy or Seek and Kill operation to end this situation as soon as possible. So as it came together there were eight of use. Each had a specialty and was cross trained with another specialty. I was a Shooter, at a distance to scoped ‘em and ended them, one shot one kill, at close range, we my shotgun did a massive amount of work, usually taking out several per shot up close. This was like being hired to go to hell and shoot the most grotesque and horrifying creatures you could imagine. These Zombies had been people and dues to some type of infection or experiment or exposure had become flesh eaters, the undead, seeking Humans as a food source. It seemed they had no desire for animals of any type, perhaps they needed something we Humans had because they once were Human, but he certainly were no longer such!
So, there in the jungles of Malaysia we hunter and re-killed these creatures, being prepared and having a very fortified base of operations kept us off the menu for these Zombies. From the tower of our Base we honed our skills with the .223’s and .308’s, our Mini-14’s, M-16’s and .308 M-14’s and .308 Win., left many Zombies for the jungle to take. A shot to the head was the key or total destruction of the head like from a rain of a shotgun blast or the canon ball effect of a Slug or Sabot shell blast from a shotgun. When we came close to these creatures, as we did on patrols at times, we were always ready, their stench of decay was a sure sign from a distance we were close, then the large caliber handguns and sometimes a long razor sharp blade would deal out death quickly and without prejudice! It seemed that the only way to get this “disease” was by a Zombie bite. So, the head was the thing to go for.
The Corporation had some .50 Cal., Auto Rifles delivered to us. These weapons were unbelievable! Awesome power you could easily hit and completely destroy as target from one or even two miles away! What the fuck, over?
They were heavy and took a little time to get used to them and good with them and they were for short patrols and high ground hunting only, but did a wild job from our towers.
To give you an idea of what this was to us on patrol and “hunts”, we each had an assault right, shotgun, two or three pistols or machine-pistols, a long and a short blade, a hatchet, explosive devices such as grenades and flare-guns with a variety of flares, camo unmarked uniforms, and complete support from the government and corporation until all threats had been completely neutralized and the cause and source of the outbreak had been identified, at that point certain experts would be called in to deal with this or we would be told to destroy with extreme prejudice.
Every now and again we would come across and camp or sightseeing tour, or some poor idiots that ignored the government warnings about staying out of the jungle and remote areas and had gotten through or around the government military fortified check points, that had been the latest meals for the Zombies. Orders were to kill the reanimated victim bodies and any Zombies of course we had taken down and burn everything. No evidence, no panic. Covert Black Ops, that was the game, and a hell of a game it was too.
I never really stopped to think about it. My partner was an ex-military man who had been a MP and had also had been involved in anti-terrorist operations. He had a continuous sense of humor and never seemed to be bothered by anything, there was only a hand full of people involved with this directly and who would believe us anyway? It was real and happening, so why not us to do the job, outrageous money and benefits and we had not lost any team members, so I thought, “why not, rock on!”
The operations were pretty surgical but sometimes it could get real hairy on the patrols. Once we came upon a large group or about 15 Zombies just wandering around the jungle, as we began to dispatch them another group of about 40 Zombies were coming up the side of the hill we had humped up to, they were on the opposite side where it was a lot steeper, so we tossed a few grenades and some inferno flares into the mass as they awkwardly made their way up the hill side, meanwhile we did not ignore our immediate new friends. It turned out that we had to pretty much go to hand to hand, one hand holding the throat or head of the Zombie to keep the mouth away while using a hatchet, blade or pistol round through the head. When the initial 15 Zombies went down we immediately opened up with our shotguns and full auto rifles into the neck, faces, heads of what was left of the Zombies coming up on us. It was a fucking mess. After the melee we searched the area and about a quarter of a mile away from the hilltop on an old trail there were about 25 more Zombies lumbering towards the hill. We all took a few to get relaxed and loose, scoped our targets and in about 45 seconds they were all destroyed, left on the trail. The good thing about the Zombies in the jungle was that they we already in decay, so it did not take long to returned them to the Earth. The animals and insects that finished off the bodies did not seem to become infected at all, again, it seems only the bite of the Zombie was the danger and only to Man!
It was hard to believe that these things were real, that this was happening, but it was real and the danger was all too real. So, day and night we took care of business. Not too many people realize that in some of the remote areas of this Earth there are villages, tribes, towns, posts where thousands of people many live, they may be separated by distance and terrain, but they are there and an outbreak could easily affect all of these people and on into the larger towns and cities, so the spread had to be terminated completely.
